10. Cadillac CTS-V (2004–2007)

Cadillac didn’t ease into performance. It went straight for the throat. The first CTS-V stuffed a 5.7-liter LS6 V8 from the C5 Corvette Z06 into a midsize sedan and called it a day. 400 horsepower, rear-wheel drive, and, most importantly, a mandatory Tremec T56 6-speed manual transmission. No automatic safety net, no watered-down version. In 2006, the LS6 was replaced with the C6's LS2 6.0-liter. Output stayed the same while reliability improved.

You either drove it properly or you didn’t drive it at all. It wasn’t perfect. The chassis could feel a little overwhelmed, and the interior didn’t exactly scream “$50K luxury.” But none of that really mattered. This car had attitude, and more importantly, it had intent. Cadillac was done playing it safe.

9. Cadillac ATS-V (2016–2019)

Instead of going V8, Cadillac took a different route with the ATS-V. Its 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 produced 464 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque, pushing it to 60 mph in about 3.8 seconds. Where it stood out was the balance. The chassis was razor-sharp, arguably more precise than a contemporary BMW M3.

Buyers could choose between a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic, which helped its enthusiast credibility. The only thing holding it back? It lacked the drama and sound of a V8.

8. Cadillac CTS-V Coupe (2011–2015)

Cadillac went all-in on design here. The coupe looks like it was carved out of sheet metal with a machete, and somehow it works. Underneath, it’s the familiar formula: a 6.2-liter supercharged LSA V8 with 556 horsepower and enough torque to overwhelm the rear tires on demand.

Crucially, you could get it with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic, which makes it more than just a style statement. It’s not the most practical, and it’s not the most balanced, but if you want a V car that makes an entrance before it even starts, this is it.

7. Cadillac CTS-V Sedan (2009–2015)

This is where Cadillac proved they're in the performance game for the long haul. The second-gen CTS-V sedan didn’t just show up, it went to the Nürburgring and put down a time that forced people to pay attention. 556 horsepower, 0–60 in under 4 seconds, and a top speed pushing 190 mph. This wasn’t theoretical performance. It was backed up by the numbers.

Like the other CTS V body styles, it offered both a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic, which meant it could appeal to both purists and people who just wanted to go fast with minimal effort. It still carried a bit of that old-school heaviness, but honestly, that’s part of the appeal. It feels like a muscle car in a suit.

6. Cadillac STS-V (2006–2009)

The STS-V is one of those cars that feels like a stepping stone, and that’s exactly what it was. Cadillac threw a supercharged 4.4-liter Northstar V8 under the hood, making 469 horsepower, and aimed it squarely at the Germans. It wasn't quite the monstrous performance machine that many of the other V Series models were. But that also helped make it one of, if not the most reliable, Northstar V8-powered model of the bunch.

Its lack of a manual option established it as more of a fast luxury sedan than a true driver's car. And that's exactly why people love the car to this day. No fuss, no big statement, just a dependable, quick, and comfortable vehicle.

5. Cadillac Escalade-V (2023–Present)

There is no logical reason for a 6,000-pound SUV to have a 682-horsepower supercharged V8. And yet, here we are. The Escalade-V is less about precision and more about presence. It’s brutally quick in a straight line, absurdly loud for what it is, and somehow still manages to be comfortable enough for daily use.

It runs a 10-speed automatic only, which is exactly what you’d expect. Is it the purest V car? Not even close. But it might be the most unapologetic. Cadillac leaned into the excess instead of trying to justify it, and that's what makes the Escalade V a truly special machine.

4. Cadillac CTS-V (2016–2019)

By the time the third-gen CTS-V showed up, Cadillac had figured it out. Instead of experimenting, it just borrowed the LT4 V8 from the Chevrolet Corvette C7 Z06 and built the rest of the car around it. 640 horsepower. 630 lb-ft of torque. Nearly 200 mph flat out. It’s brutally fast, almost to the point where it feels excessive for a sedan.

The downside? It dropped the manual entirely, coming only with an 8-speed automatic. That decision still stings a bit. This car is incredible, but it could’ve been legendary with a third pedal.

3. Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing (2022–Present)

This is the car that quietly fixes everything people complained about. The CT4-V Blackwing brings back balance, feel, and thankfully, a 6-speed manual transmission (alongside a 10-speed automatic). With up to 472 horsepower, it’s not the most powerful V car, but it might be the most satisfying to actually drive. Somewhat similar to the aforementioned ATS V, the lack of a roaring V8 robs it of being perhaps the greatest V Series car of all time.

With that said, the steering is alive, the chassis is playful, and it feels like a car built for people who actually enjoy driving. It doesn’t try to dominate with numbers. It wins you over the long way.

2. Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing (2022–Present)

The CT5 V Blackwing is Cadillac's mic drop. If this ends up being the last of its kind, Cadillac made sure it went out properly. 668 horsepower from a supercharged V8. A top speed over 200 mph. And somehow, in 2020s America, you can still get it with a 6-speed manual transmission. That alone feels almost rebellious.

It’s not just fast, it’s complete. It handles, it stops, it sounds right, and it doesn’t feel compromised anywhere. This is Cadillac proving it can go toe-to-toe with anything from BMW or Mercedes-Benz and not blink.

1. Cadillac CTS-V Wagon (2011–2014)

The one that shouldn’t exist, but does. This is the peak. Not because it’s the fastest or the most advanced, but because it makes absolutely no sense, and Cadillac built it anyway. A wagon. Rear-wheel drive. A 556-horsepower supercharged V8. And yes, available with a 6-speed manual transmission.

It does everything: sub-4-second 0-60 runs, real cargo space, and the kind of presence that makes enthusiasts do a double-take every time they see one. It’s rare, it’s weird, and it’s completely uncompromised. This isn’t just the best Cadillac V, it’s one of the most interesting performance cars of the 21st century, full stop.

Next-Generation ICE Cadillac CT5 confirmed
for Lansing Grand River Assembly

Today, Cadillac will announce that after six strong years, the current generation Cadillac CT4 and CT5 will be retired after model year 2026. The CT4 will continue through June 2026 and the CT5 until the end of 2026.

Over recent years, these vehicles have consistently delivered on our expectations through exceptional performance, cutting-edge technology, and superior craftsmanship earning many accolades. This success has led to an underscoring strong demand that cements the brand's legacy for generations to come.

Therefore, I am thrilled to confirm that the legacy of the CT5 will continue as a next-generation internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle in a future model year. The next-generation CT5 will be manufactured at GM’s Lansing Grand River Assembly plant. It will be available for purchase in the United States and Canada. We’ll share more details as plans are finalized.

This year marks the 120th Anniversary of the Cadillac brand. To celebrate, Cadillac is proud to expand the Collector’s Series with the introduction of the 2023 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing 120th Anniversary Edition.

The 120th Anniversary Edition is limited to 120 cars, each uniquely numbered with a year in Cadillac’s history. Car 1902, the first in this new Collector’s Series, represents the founding year of Cadillac.

The opportunity to own the first 120th Anniversary Edition raised $250,000 at the Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach auction. Cadillac donated the full hammer price to the SAE Foundation, whose goal is to increase access to world-class STEM experiences for students around the world. As they do with all charity sales, Barrett-Jackson waived all fees and commissions for the auction of Car 1902.

“Everyone at Cadillac is thrilled with this auction result. We proudly support the SAE Foundation and are grateful to Barrett-Jackson for providing this opportunity,” said Rory Harvey, vice president, Global Cadillac. “We will help create a new sustainability focused challenge for high-school students across the country, as well as provide hands-on immersive STEM learning for students in under-resourced communities.”

Bred to perform on and off the track

Leveraging the brand’s championship-winning racing heritage to create the most track-capable Cadillacs ever built, the V-Series Blackwing models represent the pinnacle of Cadillac performance, technology and craftsmanship.

The CT5-V Blackwing is the most powerful and fastest Cadillac production model in history — with a top track speed of more than 200 mph — while the CT4-V Blackwing is the most powerful and fastest-ever Cadillac subcompact.

Under their hoods, the CT5-V Blackwing uses an upgraded and hand-assembled 6.2L supercharged V-8 rated at 668 horsepower (498 kW) and 659 lb-ft of torque (893 Nm), while an evolution of the Cadillac 3.6L Twin-Turbo V-6 drives the CT4-V Blackwing, rated at 472 hp (352 kW) and 445 lb-ft of torque (603 Nm).

Every V-Series Blackwing offers a standard six-speed manual gearbox or an available 10-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission. Both models also feature advanced, extensively track- and road-tested high-performance braking systems. The CT5-V Blackwing features the largest factory-installed brakes in Cadillac history, along with an available lightweight carbon-ceramic brake package that offers weight savings, durability and heat management.

The newest hidden elements on the CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing represent the union of Cadillac engineering and design!

The new CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing, the most track-capable Cadillac models ever, began their path to production at General Motors’ testing and technical centers in Milford and Warren, Michigan, respectively. Designers paid homage to those crucial sites with laser-etched maps of each located on pads that sit to left and right of the steering wheel on manual-transmission models.

The maps are among a myriad of hidden elements to be found on the luxury performance sedans.

The Milford Proving Ground map represents the thorough engineering development that led to two of the fastest and most powerful Cadillacs ever. The Warren Tech Center map represents the on-campus Design team’s focal point on craftsmanship and functional elegance. The serialized V-Series badge at the bottom of the steering wheel represents a car specially manufactured for the customer by the team at GM Lansing Grand River Assembly.

“The CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing are the quintessential examples of form and function coming together,” said Brandon Vivian, executive chief engineer, Cadillac. “This was made possible by Engineering and Design working together from the very beginning to get the most out of these cars. The steering wheel pads symbolize that union, with the customer at the center of it all.”

The customer representation comes on the steering wheel with each customer getting a unique serialized V-Series plaque that identifies their specific vehicle.

The pads take the place of the shift paddles behind the steering wheel on cars not equipped with the optional 10-speed automatic transmission. The vehicles with the automatic transmission still include their functional magnesium paddle shifters, allowing drivers to select their preferred gear.

“The V-Series Blackwings are all about connecting with drivers in ways that go beyond the numbers they can produce on a track,” said Vivian. “It’s an involving experience, with unprecedented attention to detail in all areas of performance and design.”

Indeed, those map details are only two of the more than two dozen subtle, discreet and outright hidden visual references to the V-Series brand and Cadillac’s racing heritage.

Some of them are more obvious such as the V-Series logo and its unique Mondrian pattern that’s incorporated on the manual shift knob, or the Blackwing winged emblem that’s found in a pocket of each available 19-inch Tech Bronze wheel.

Others, however, are more difficult to locate, such as the Mondrian pattern on the underwing of the vehicle or V-Series logo on the air strakes that come with the optional Carbon Fiber 1 package. Others will not be revealed, leaving each owner to discover the myriad of surprising and delightful details.

Additionally, the first 250 production builds of each model are Collector Series vehicles, and they’re commemorated by the people who built them with two special collector plates on the sills and B-pillars. Each sill plate features the signature from a member of the Cadillac V-Series team while the Collector Series plate found on the B-pillar corresponds to the serialized Performance Steering Wheel in each car.

Also, the CT5-V Blackwing’s hand-built supercharged V-8 engine features a signed plaque from the master builder.

“The driving experience of these special models never fails to impress,” said Vivian. “And the more you look inside, outside and even below the surface, the more they reward.”

The 2022 CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing are on sale now with limited availability. The CT4-V Blackwing starts at an MSRP of $59,990¹ and fully configured MSRP at $87,775¹. The CT5-V Blackwing has a starting MSRP of $84,990¹ and a fully configured MSRP of $125,980¹. Customers can build their own V-Series Blackwing online at Cadillac.com.

Milford Proving Ground

The Milford Proving Ground opened in 1924 as the industry's first dedicated automobile testing facility. Since then it has grown to nearly four times its original size. It’s official – the highly anticipated Cadillac V-Series Blackwing has received Ship to Commerce!

Over 15 months ago we announced the fourth generation V-Series sub-brand will carry the Blackwing name, and now the pinnacle of Cadillac performance, technology and design are leaving Lansing Grand River Assembly and on their way to dealerships.

As you’re aware the initial 250 of each CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing are for the participants in the reservation program. With these enthusiastic customers seeking information we encourage the field and dealers to engage with their reservation customers and keep them appraised of the status of their V-Series Blackwing and share exciting information (like VIN) when assigned.

While initial vehicles may be shipping we know the question dealers/you can expect “When will mine be delivered?” So we’re all aligned on a response, our consistent recommended response is: While we cannot commit to exact production/delivery dates, we have communicated the estimated delivery beginning in late Summer (i.e. end of September). Your dealer will have your individual vehicle status based on their event code in Order Work Bench.

2022 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing Delivers Highest Downforce in V-Series History

Cadillac’s fastest-ever sub-compact sport sedan, along with the supercharged CT5-V Blackwing, leverages latest aero-development technology to optimize performance

With a Cadillac-estimated top speed of 189 mph and track-tailored chassis and suspension features, the 2022 CT4-V Blackwing is a quantifiably quick performance sedan. Its available carbon fiber packages deliver exceptional agility and confidence thanks to the reduction of lift and the increase of downforce they produce.

Both available aero packages were developed using a new five-belt rolling-road wind tunnel at the GM Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, as well as the Windshear wind tunnel used by Cadillac Racing in North Carolina. The result is the highest level of aerodynamic downforce ever produced by a Cadillac V-Series production car.

“Aero performance was key to helping deliver the uniquely agile, engaging driving experience in the CT4-V Blackwing,” said Scott Sier, aerodynamics performance engineer, Cadillac. “Thanks to components like the underwing, we were able to work with design to generate downforce without the use of large wings that didn’t fit with the design.”

The available aero packages are inspired by the multiple-championship-winning Cadillac Racing DPi-V.R race car. Over 500 hours of wind tunnel testing and 300 simulations using advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics technology honed the Carbon Fiber packages on CT4-V Blackwing. The use of Virtual Reality headsets also allowed Cadillac engineers to identify opportunities in real-time to exploit additional aerodynamic efficiencies.

The five-belt rolling road wind tunnel at the GM Technical Center allows engineers to spend more time fine-tuning aerodynamic components on full-size vehicles. The five belts provide a more accurate simulation of under-vehicle airflow than previous-generation wind tunnels.

“We set out to create a capable and balanced performance sedan not just with mechanical grip, but aerodynamically as well,” said Tony Roma, chief engineer, Cadillac V-Series Blackwing. “With the CT4-V Blackwing we create net downforce that is incredibly rare in production vehicles. What this means is that the car gets pressed down into the road the faster you go, giving it more grip, greater stability and inspiring the driver to confidently explore its full capabilities. Not only have we produced our most track-capable sub-compact sedan ever, but we continue to work with our racing counterparts to explore the limits of physics to make better cars.”

Aerodynamic components include:

Front underwing
- Inspired by the Cadillac DPi-V.R race car, the front underwing creates a low pressure zone that helps press the car into the road and directs air to cool critical components.
- Air strakes control airflow, directing air away from the underbody, helping create downforce and balance the vehicle.
Front dive planes
- Increase grip to front tires by pushing the front down.
- A 18 mm sidewall controls air and directs vortices downstream to better manage airflow.
Rear spoiler
- Integrated to balance the car for greater stability.
- Curvature tuned for the creation of downforce without the addition of bolt on components.
- Features a functional 3 mm Gurney flap that helps direct airflow and assists in creating more downforce.
V-Series Blackwing grille mesh
- Radius of each V-shaped inlet tuned to optimize airflow.
- Each V-shaped inlet features two different functional textures to control and direct air.
Brake cooling ducts
- 3D-printed in the General Motors Additive Manufacturing facility, these ducts keep the front and rear rotors cool even in extreme track conditions.
- Function as a foil to direct air more efficiently around front control arms.
Fender vents
- Front fender vents release pressure built up within the front wheel well to reduce lift and drag.
- Aid in removing hot air from the engine bay.
Front splitter, rocker moldings and extensions, and rear diffuser
- Help reduce lift and balance the vehicle at high speeds.
Flat underbody
- Body panels help with airflow management.
Rear control arm covers
- Prevent air from building up around rear wheel well and control arms.

Sale of the first retail production CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing manual transmission models at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction in Arizona raised $430,000 for Black Ambition, a PolicyLink nonprofit initiative launched by Pharrell Williams to help bridge the racial wealth and equity gap.

The full hammer price for the 472-horsepower, twin-turbocharged CT4-V Blackwing VIN 001 and the 668-horsepower, supercharged CT5-V Blackwing VIN 001 goes to Black Ambition as Barrett-Jackson waived the fees and commissions typically associated with their collector car auctions.

The high bidders also received tickets to an exclusive driving experience at Spring Mountain Motor Resort and Country Club in Nevada as well as tickets to an upcoming IMSA race.

“Everyone at Cadillac and GM is proud of the results and what the sale of these new CT4-V and CT5-V Blackwing models will mean for others through Black Ambition,” said Melissa Grady, Cadillac chief marketing officer. “We are proud to support this nonprofit initiative to help reduce barriers, improve access to capital and provide mentorship to up-and-coming entrepreneurs.”

Black Ambition is a startup incubator for Black and Latinx entrepreneurs who are launching tech, design, health care and consumer product/service businesses. Prize money awarded by the organization in business competitions is used as capital by the winning recipients to help get their startup off the ground.

The money raised by the Cadillac Blackwing sales will go toward Black Ambition’s prize awards.

2022 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing Order Guides & Online Brochures

2022 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing
Cadillac is relying on a familiar powertrain for the CT4-V Blackwing. Specifically, it will be powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V-6. It is the same engine that powered the ATS-V. The CT4-V Blackwing is showing the same LF4 RPO code that the ATS-V utilized. The ATS-V was rated at 464 horsepower and 445 pound-feet of torque and the CT4-V Blackwing will be slightly higher than those figures. The CT4-V Blackwing will have a top speed of 189 mph and go from zero to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds. The ATS-V was around a 4.0 second car, so a 3.8 sprint is somewhat expected with a more modern automatic.

The CT4-V Blackwing will offer two transmission options. The standard transmission will be a six-speed manual, while a 10-speed automatic 10L90E will remain optional. The Blackwing cars will have GM’s FE4 performance suspension setup standard, along with an electronic limited slip differential. Brembo brakes, a rear differential cooler and launch control are also found on the standard feature list of the CT4-V Blackwing.

CT4-V Blackwing buyers will also have the option of two different carbon fiber exterior appearance packages and Cadillac is also offering optional magnesium wheels.

2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing
The CT5-V Blackwing also has a familiar engine under the hood. The LT4 is a hand-built supercharged 6.2-liter V-8. It is the same LT4 V-8 that powered the CTS-V and the ZL1. The CT5-V Blackwing will have the fastest road racing track time of any V-Series car ever. In addition, it will go zero to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds with a top speed of 200 mph.

The power output of the LT4 is estimated at 670hp. The power will flow through a six-speed manual or optional 10-speed 10L90E automatic. The CT5-V Blackwing will also feature FE4 performance suspension, launch control, rear differential cooler and Brembo brakes standard. One area of differentiation between the two vehicles is the fact that CT5-V Blackwing buyers will have the option to upgrade to cross-drilled carbon ceramic brakes at all four corners. The CT5-V Blackwings also include the option to upgrade to carbon fiber exterior appearance packages and magnesium wheels.

Today Cadillac has revealed the final teaser in an ongoing teaser campaign. Through this campaign Cadillac has shared many special details with the customer and created excitement in preparation for reveal.

After the livestream reveal on February 1, customers interested in a 2022 model year CT4-V Blackwing or CT5-V Blackwing will have the opportunity to reserve their preferred vehicle starting at 7:30 p.m. ET / 4:30 p.m. PT on Cadillac.com.

By using the Reserve Yours page, customers can make a reservation for one of the first 250 CT4-V Blackwings or 250 CT5-V Blackwings built. Given their limited quantity and collectible nature, all V-Series Blackwing vehicles are Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) sequenced by year, model and transmission. A portion of the VIN sequence is commemorated on a unique serialized plate located at the bottom of the available high-performance steering wheel. All Reserve Yours customers will receive this high-performance steering wheel and serial number plate.

Blackwing Unique 3D Printed Emblem

Today Cadillac has released the fifth image in the V-Series Blackwing teaser series. Here's a preview of the unique 3D printed emblem on the manual shifter. The manual transmissions on the V-series Blackwing models will be equipped with Cadillac’s first 3D-printed parts.

The V-Series Blackwing models will be the first GM production products to have parts created using additive manufacturing, including a unique 3D-printed emblem atop the manual shifter knob. In addition, two HVAC ducts and an electrical harness bracket are also 3D-printed parts. By leveraging additive manufacturing the team was able to reduce costs and innovate upon the manual transmission, a feature that continues to be a strong desire for many performance driving enthusiasts.

In a recent Harris Poll study conducted on behalf of Cadillac about the current knowledge and adoption of the manual transmission, Cadillac found that 66 percent of American adults surveyed know how to drive a manual. Of those who do not know how to drive a manual, roughly 40 percent are either a least somewhat or very interested in learning.

Interest in driving or learning to drive a manual is higher among those with $75K+ in annual household income (64% interested) and those between 18-34 in age (62% interested).
More than half (55%) of American adults say they have owned or leased a car with a manual transmission.

DETROIT – Cadillac today announced that the fourth generation of its V-Series sub-brand, currently spearheaded by the 2020 CT4-V and CT5-V, will eventually include ultra-performance variants that carry the Blackwing name. The future, track-capable vehicles will be called CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing, representing the apex of Cadillac performance and driver engagement.

“The Blackwing name has come to represent the very best of Cadillac performance engineering, craftsmanship and technology,” said Brandon Vivian, Cadillac executive chief engineer. “The new CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing build on the brand’s respected legacy of ultimate-performance driving experiences and elevate them even further.”

The V-Series Blackwing models¹ will feature specially tuned chassis, vehicle control technologies and engines. Each model will also be offered with a manual transmission – a feature most luxury brands no longer offer but continues to be a strong desire for many performance driving enthusiasts.

The CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing have been undergoing testing that includes sessions at tracks and road courses around the country. Earlier this year, at Virginia International Raceway, each car set lap times seconds faster than the legendary ATS-V and CTS-V.

Cadillac Won't Offer Its New Blackwing V8 On CT5-V Or Escalade

Enthusiasts met the rollout of the Cadillac CT4-V and CT5-V with tepid enthusiasm. The two cars, with 320 (239 kilowatts) and 355 horsepower (265 kilowatts) respectively, didn't rival the high power bar set by cars like the ATS-V and CTS-V before them. But with Cadillac's new twin-turbocharged Blackwing engine, hopes were that the V8 might make its way to upcoming CT5-V and possibly a handful of other vehicles. But a new report suggests that's unlikely to happen.

Cadillac's 4.2-liter twin-turbo Blackwing V8 debuted only last year, popping up in the CT6 V-Sport — now the CT6-V — with 550 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. The engine's been stymied in every attempt to power a different Cadillac model since then. Its only two use cases have been a first and second run of the original, limited-edition super sedan and the CT6 Platinum V8 trim at a slightly detuned 500 hp and 553 lb-ft. Motor Trend cites "a highly placed source at GM" as saying that the Blackwing won't go into the coming high-performance version of the CT5-V nor in the next-gen Escalade. Left without options, there's a chance the Blackwing will die with the CT6, itself a sedan with its grille on the executioner's block just waiting for the bite of an ax that might or might not shortly fall.

Cost-cutting has been tagged as the reason for this misfortune; Cadillac's sales malaise and lack of clarity as to how to turn sales around led GM to downsize the brand's allowance. The parent company chose to build the new CT5 on the Alpha platform used for the erstwhile ATS and CTS instead of the Omega platform underpinning the CT6. Along with that choice, the MT report says expense reasons nixed fitting the Blacking V8. We know the lower-tier V series CT5 will work with a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 making 355 hp and 400 lb-ft. When we heard spy video of the upper-tier V series CT5 out testing, the engine sounded like the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 that would be a carryover from the last model.

Early plans called for the CT5 sedan and XT6 three-row crossover to use the same Omega rear-wheel-drive platform as the CT6. That would have made the optional V8 engine a natural fit for the two vehicles. But the CT5 and XT6 don't share the same base as the XT6, and Cadillac says it's too expensive to shoehorn the engine into either vehicle, at least, at the moment.

It's unlikely that the new Escalade gets a unique engine at all. The SUV will probably use a GM-sourced pushrod V8 off the shelf, either one of the 5.3-, 6.2-, or 6.6-liter options already available. The current Escalade uses a 6.2-liter V8 that produces 420 hp (313 kW)and 460 lb-ft (624 Nm) of torque.

We already know that a more-powerful CT5-V is happening. But based on this new report, Cadillac's Blackwing V8 probably isn't hiding under the hood of those prototypes. Considering the CT5-V uses the same Alpha platform as the outgoing ATS (and thus, Camaro), it's possible that the 6.2-liter V8 from the Camaro carries over. If you slap a supercharger on that engine, a la ZL1, it could produce as much as 650 hp (485 kW).

2020 Cadillac CT6-V A new kind of V

One of the weird tidbits of car news in the past year was the change in naming for the 2020 Cadillac CT6-V. When it was first revealed, it was called V-Sport, the term previously used for Cadillacs with more moderate performance upgrades than the full-blown V cars that possessed massive power outputs and serious track-going capabilities. But then, before the car in question went on sale, Cadillac changed the name to match the equally moderately sporty CT4-V and CT5-V that officially downgraded the V name. So what should we make of this CT6-V, then? Is it a hardcore performance machine like the old V cars? Or is it what we’re expecting of the new V cars: a lightly upgraded version of the base car that isn’t particularly distinguished? As it turns out, the CT6-V sits between these two extremes to create a car that’s involving and exciting for the driver without compromising the CT6’s refinement and luxury.

Mechanically, the CT6-V is ultimately closer to its full-bore V predecessors. The highlight is the “Blackwing” twin-turbocharged 4.2-liter V8 that makes 550 horsepower and 640 pound-feet of torque. Besides giving the engine prodigious output, Cadillac borrowed some pages from the AMG handbook: the turbocharger is nestled in between the cylinder heads, just like the current 4.0-liter AMG V8, and each engine is hand-built start to finish by one of six engine builders. The builder’s name is even featured in the engine bay. They’re special details that fit the idea of the old V cars, but the fact that a version of the same engine is in the Platinum CT6 does make its inclusion in the CT6-V seem less special, even if its output is notably less at 500 horsepower and 574 pound-feet of torque.

Setting aside the details, the engine performs well in the real world. It’s astonishingly smooth, exactly what you want from a fast flagship. It also emits a unique exhaust note that’s both raspy and growly. You won’t mistake it for a pushrod powerplant. The power and torque provide a prominent push at all points in the rev band after a brief moment for the turbos to spool up. It’s just a shame there isn’t much of a rev band, as the engine redlines at 6,000 rpm, which is easy to hit thanks to the engine’s creamy character. It’s so low one wonders why Cadillac bothered developing a double-overhead-cam engine at all.

The V8 is coupled to a 10-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The 10-speed is perfectly fine when cruising around town. But driving hard or manually shifting, it doesn’t change cogs very quickly, and shifts can even be a bit jerky. The all-wheel drive works well, providing plenty of traction, but you can still detect the car’s rear-drive roots with a stab of the throttle and accompanying looseness from the tail.

The best part of the CT6-V is its chassis, which is capable of doing everything you might want in a big sports sedan. Do you wish to cruise in serenity? Keep it in the “Tour” mode, and the magnetically controlled adaptive suspension (also standard on Platinum, but specially tuned for the CT6-V) makes every bump vanish while keeping the body perfectly stable and level. The steering lightens up for carefree turning. And the relaxed mood is emphasized by the near silent cabin.

In the middle is the Sport setting, which makes the steering a little heavier and firms up the suspension. It’s best as a default setting for drivers who don’t like the more isolated Tour mode but don’t want to go full Track mode all the time.

Speaking of which, Track mode reveals how good the CT6-V really is. The suspension firms up even more, nearly eliminating body roll while still returning a compliant ride. The steering becomes fairly heavy, but it suits the size of the car, and it actually provides a surprising amount of feedback. As in all modes, it’s quite quick and the car turns in with immediacy. That quick, communicative steering, plus the car’s rear-wheel steering, makes it nimble and easy to place. It feels like it’s an entire size class smaller than it is. It’s also reassuring to have the V’s upgraded Brembo brakes up front.

In Track mode, it's safe to say that there isn’t another full-size luxury sedan that feels as fun to drive hard as the CT6-V. It even sounds the part, as Track mode also enhances the synthesized engine noise. While not necessary, it does actually sound good and burbly in this application, so it’s not unwelcome.

Visually, the CT6-V is extremely subtle, and more in line with the V sub-brand's new positioning. From the outside, the only tipoffs are the mesh grilles, V badges on the fenders, and front and rear spoilers. It’s refreshing, though. This is a car for someone who is secure in who they are and what they drive. It doesn’t have to proclaim its ultra-special configuration to the world with garish carbon fiber splitters, vents and spoilers as the CTS-V did.

Interior upgrades are subtler, with special gauge graphics and copper-accented carbon fiber trim the only things really differentiating it from a CT6 Platinum. However, it ultimately suffers from the same issues as every other CT6. As noted in our XT6 first drive, there's a certain chunkiness to Cadillac's interior design that makes it feel low-rent and uninspired compared to German rivals, or even Lincoln's ritzy new SUVs. There are also some functional issues with some of the updates made for 2020. Cadillac's new monostable shifter doesn’t feel as substantial as the previous model. The redundant control knob that replaces the CT6's old touchpad looks and feels nice (as does the accompanying volume knob), but the lack of fore, aft, left and right movements limit its functionality. The drive mode button is also difficult to access.

While the CT6-V has some minor faults, they don’t diminish the CT6-V’s impressive driving dynamics. In one car, you get a confidence-inspiring backroad companion plus a soothing interstate eater. It’s the luxury flagship for the person that wants to always be in the driver seat, never in the back – most of its competitors are the other way around. Importantly, the CT6-V also represents a worthwhile performance upgrade over the CT6 Platinum, both in terms of its engine as well as handling capability. It even costs less at $95,890 versus $97,490, although the Platinum does counter with fancier massaging seats and Super Cruise, which aren't available on the CT6-V. Further proof that Cadillac figures CT6-V owners intend to drive themselves, then. And if they do, they'll find the brand's new high-powered flagship will let them enjoy the experience, no matter what it's called.

Cadillac's President Wasn't Surprised By Lukewarm Reaction to New V Cars

Last year, Johan de Nysschen abruptly left his position as president of Cadillac after four years at the helm. Early in his tenure, the brand moved its headquarters to New York City from Detroit; in September, it announced it was moving back to Michigan. A few months after that, GM said it would shutter a number of plants in the US, including the Detroit-Hamtramck plant that produces Cadillac's flagship CT6 sedan. Then earlier this summer, Cadillac introduced new V-series versions of its CT4 and CT5 sedans (pictured above) that have a lot less power, and seemingly less race-track capability than the old ATS- and CTS-V.

All worrying for a brand that, in the last few years, developed serious enthusiast credentials. It seemed those might go away, with Cadillac being forced to conform to what's happening elsewhere in GM.

Steve Carlisle, the former GM Canada head who replaced De Nysschen last year, doesn't think we should be concerned. Last week at the Washington D.C. first drive of the new XT6 SUV, we spoke with Carlisle about the future of the brand, more specifically its performance cars.

Where the V-series versions of the ATS and CTS were full-on rivals to BMW M and Mercedes-AMG's best, the new Vs are mid-tier offerings. Many were confused by the move, especially after Cadillac had pretty well established what a V-series car represented.

"The visceral reaction to that—maybe not in a good way—before you tell the whole story, it's pretty amazing," Carlisle said. "It just tells you how much emotion that there is around these performance sedans."

"You can always have steps and gradations in terms of what you offer, and who you make it accessible to, and how," he continued. "And that's really where we're going."

Carlisle said he wasn't surprised by the mixed reaction to the new Vs. "It's been a bit, kind of fun," he said with some humility. But there is more to come. Shortly after debuting the new CT4- and CT5-V, Cadillac brought camouflaged prototypes of hotter versions of the two new sedans to the Detroit Grand Prix last month. Carlisle wouldn't reveal any specific details on these upcoming models, but he did hint at a name, when the subject of the brand's new 4.2-liter twin-turbo dual-overhead-cam V-8, called Blackwing, came up.

"The engine is one question, but the idea of Blackwing is another question," he said. "You can literally equate it with the engine, or you can equate it with the concept high-performance track-capable. So then what can we do with the Blackwing?"

Ever since the higher-performance versions of the CT4- and CT5-V were first teased, there's been a rumor floating around that they will carry the "Blackwing" moniker. Carlisle didn't confirm anything to us, but don't be surprised if this is actually the case.

Our colleagues at Car and Driver were at the Detroit Grand Prix when the two sedans were paraded out, and report that the CT4-V sounded like it had a V-6 while the CT5-V's noise was that of a V-8. At the XT6 event, a Cadillac engineer also wouldn't rule out the possibility of a manual for the CT4-V, just as there was with the old ATS-V.

It's unclear if the CT5-V will get the new twin-turbo V-8. Right now, the future of that engine is a little unclear. It was developed in house by Cadillac, and is currently offered in the CT6 Platinum and CT6-V. While the CT6 is confirmed to continue production in China for that market, the big sedan's American future has yet to be decided. Anything beyond January 2020—when Hamtramck is scheduled to close—is "tied up, to a great extent with [United Auto Workers] negotiations," Carlisle said.

Before you let your imagination run wild, no, we won't see this V-8 in the C8 Corvette. Carlisle said the first time he was asked if Cadillac would share the new V-8 with other GM brands, he replied, "over my dead body."

And if the CT6 dies in America, that doesn't spell an immediate end for the V-8. "There's lots of things we could do with it," Carlisle said, though he had no specific plans to announce.

This V-8 also signals the sort of engineering work that will be undertaken at Cadillac in the future. "When it comes to powertrains and propulsion, that's a heart and soul kind of thing. It's the DNA of a car," Carlisle said. "From a Cadillac perspective, there are certain things that need to be exclusive to Cadillac."

And while not all Cadillac products will get exclusive engines—the CT4-V, for example, shares its 2.7-liter turbo-four with the new Chevrolet Silverado—they will have Cadillac touches. "The powertrains and propulsion that we use, there will always be a distinctive Cadillac element to them. There just has to be," Carlisle said.

The Cadillac boss told us that performance SUVs are on the table—"I say why not?"—but he concedes they could never replace true sports sedans. "You're dealing with higher [centers of gravity], weight distributions, everything like that," he said.

As Cadillac is charged with rolling out more, and better, SUVs, Carlisle has no intention to abandon the V brand. "You can't meet better advocates for our brand anyway than V-series customers," he said. There's also engineering value in these relatively low-volume cars. "It pushes us. It makes the mainstream cars better when pushing yourselves on that envelope," Carlisle said.

You get the impression that things are brighter at Cadillac than they seemed. And best of all, it's not abandoning cars that show BMW M and Mercedes-AMG that America can make a real sports sedan.

Cadillac CT4-V & CT5-V Prototypes at Detroit Grand Prix "On Track"

On Thursday, GM announced the 2020 Cadillac CT4-V and 2020 Cadillac CT5-V without much fanfare we assume because both models were “lesser” than the ATS-V and CTS-V they indirectly replace. GM Executives explained that Cadillac’s new strategy for the new CT4-V and CT5-V are new “entry level” performance offerings with a little more styling and options than the base models. GM alluded to the fact that higher-performing variants of the CT4-V and CT5-Vmodels were on their way and that everyone should tune in to the Detroit Grand Prix Weather Tech Champsionship Race today for a suprise. Well, today Cadillac gave us a glimpse of these higher performing prototypes!

Attendees of the 2019 Detroit Grand Prix witnessed two new prototypes on the track for some "hot laps" at about 11:20AM EDT. Unfortunately those of us who tuned in on TV discovered there was zero coverage or mention of these new Cadillac prototypes. Our representatives at the venue stated that a CT4-V prototype model was covered in blue camouflage and was joined by a red camouflaged CT5-V prototype on the track. There was no official announcement as to what exactly the powertrain will be for these prototypes but we estimate it is significantly more than what was announced on Thursday. We think it is a safe bet there will be a version of Cadillac's twin-turbo Blackwing V8 engine under the hood of the V-badged CT5 prototype and we would love to see a twin turbo Blackwing V8 under the hood of the lightweight CT4-V too. But of course we are just assuming that since the CT6-V has the Blackwing, it will be passed down to it's CT siblings with even more power.

Cadillac is tight lipped on additional specifications saying only that these two vehicles "represent the next step in Cadillac's V-Series performance legacy." So we'll just have to wait until probably 2020 for the details. We like the fact that both prototypes feature large black wheels, quad exhaust tips, and black mirror caps. In addition, both appear to have more advanced/extreme aerodynamic components than the already-announced entry level CT4-V and CT5-V models.

The V-Sport designation is gone.. All Cadillac luxury high performance vehicles will evidently wear a single V badge. However, there will be two tiers of "V-Performance". You will be able to purchase a base model CT-"X", a entry level "V' or a high performing V that has yet to be named with an additional "moniker". GM President Mark Reuss says he knows there are people out there who want a performance car as a daily driver, and the new CT4-V and CT5-V that go on sale early next year are geared to them. For those of us who are current V Owners and are looking for equal to or higher level performance (power, style and handling)... we will just have to remember that "good things take time" and we are confident that Cadillac has everything under control and when these new prototypes are delivered, they will be worth the wait.

Many of our Cadillac V owners were disappointed at the recent announcement of the 2020 Cadillac CT4-V and CT5-V which recently debuted at the Detroit Grand Prix event. This disappointment primarily originates from the fact that both the CT4-V and CT5-V have significantly less horsepower than the ATS-V and CTS-V models they are intended to replace. These vehicles are not only less powerful but also feature less aggressive styling and are nowhere near the "V-Performance" level of their predecessors.

At Cadillac’s special announcement event in Detroit, GM President Mark Reuss said that there will be a second, even more powerful V-series model available at a later date. Cadillac’s official press release also states the following:

“The new lineup expands the V-Series ethos, drawing more customers into the Cadillac Performance family, and the newest Vs are focused on elevated athleticism and luxurious refinement for customers wanting a dynamic daily drive,” said Reuss. “And this is only the beginning of the V family. Cadillac’s passion for performance shines on a racetrack. Stay tuned.”

It appears that Cadillac has adopted a two-tiered V-Series performance vehicle strategy, much like many of its competitors based in Europe. The entry-level performance models, like the new CT4-V and CT5-V announced on May 30, will be “accessible” models targeted towards a specific market segment. These buyers are not "horsepower driven" and prefer driving a sporty vehicle that is somewhere in the $50K range or less.

In other words, these entry level V's are not the high-performance monsters that car enthusiasts have come to associate with Cadillac’s V-Series history such as the ATS-V, STS-V, XLR-V and CTS-V. These new V-Series cars are a step up from the “regular” base models creating a new mid-level performance offering previously occupied by the former V-Sport vehicles. In fact, the new V-Series cars are basically a direct replacement for the CTS V-Sport and XTS V-Sport models.

Rest assured that above these models will be a level of higher performance Cadillacs. These to-be-named "high performance models" will be the direct successors to the well-known and highly respected V-Series models of the past. These "not officially announced" models will be the ultra-high-performance vehicles capable that are "track ready" with adequate horsepower, torque and handling to put that smile back on every proud V owner's face.

For those of you who lost sleep last night, just keep in mind the new CT4-V and CT5-V are meant to solve a competitive disadvantage that Cadillac had for roughly the past decade – the lack of financially accessible sporty-oriented models that German competitors have identified and are owning market share "outright". If you are are a current V-Series owner, more than likely you are not interested in purchasing at CT4-V or CT5-V... you are looking for performance, handling and styling equal to or greater than the V you currently own.

One step above this entry level will be the “real” performance offerings, with extreme horsepower, more aggressive styling, special tires and adequate chassis and cooling hardware to be driven hard with a competitive advantage over other brands of luxury sport cars. The Cadillac V-Series models have now been around for 15 years, and it’s about to get bigger. However, don't be surprised if this new line of luxury performance vehicles do not even display the current V badge... our guess is it is time for the "real" next generation of Cadillac high performance luxury vehicles to be born with a new identity!

Cadillac Reveals First-Ever CT4-V and CT5-V

Driven by Cadillac’s latest turbocharging technology and building on more than 15 years of performance credentials, the first-ever 2020 CT4-V and CT5-V were unveiled today, expanding choices for the brand’s V-Series performance sub-brand.

Following the 2019 CT6-V, they grow the V-Series family with even more levels of performance, while preserving the lineage established by the original V-Series lineup introduced in 2004.

“The new V-Series sedan lineup defines modern sophistication by combining luxury appointments with thoughtful technology and athletic refinement for the discerning enthusiast,” said Brandon Vivian, Cadillac executive chief engineer. “We are inviting even more customers into the V-Series family by adding a new level of elevated performance between our Sport models and the ultimate, high-performance track capability that the V-Series has grown to represent.”

The first-ever CT4 and recently introduced CT5 represent Cadillac’s realigned sedan portfolio, characterized by new proportions, innovative technologies and more appearance and performance choices. Each is built on Cadillac’s award-winning rear-wheel-drive Alpha architecture, with the V-Series models developed to deliver the ultimate blend of performance, presence and road-going refinement.

Both share the latest standard V-Series performance technologies, including Magnetic Ride Control 4.0, which is tuned specifically for V models to enhance comfort without sacrificing performance-oriented responsiveness, and drive modes that include new V-Mode personalization. Cadillac Will Show Off Two New V-Series Models In Two Weeks

The Cadillac CT5 is a massive improvement over the ATS (and CTS) it replaces, but as we tend to do, we're already looking forward to a high-performance V model. Cadillac has hinted at a CT5-V in the past but the company never made an official confirmation of its existence - until now. In an email to CarBuzz, a Cadillac spokesperson confirmed the company is ready to reveal not one, but two all-new V models. "I can confirm that we will be revealing the CT4-V and CT5-V on the evening of May 30th. We will not be revealing the CT4 at that time though," said Stefan Cross, GM's Assistant Product and Brand Communications Manager.

The CT4 will slot below the CT5 in Cadillac's three-model sedan lineup, competing with cars like the Acura ILX, Audi A3, and Mercedes A-Class. We are surprised Cadillac isn't revealing the base CT4 first, but rather the high-performance CT4-V model. The big reveal event is set to take place just two weeks from now so we won't have a long wait before getting to see the next generation of Cadillac V models.

We still know very little about the CT4-V and CT5-V other than the latter is rumored to use a de-tuned version of the 4.2-liter twin-turbo Blackhawk V8 found in the larger CT6-V. In the CT6-V, this engine produces 550 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque and finds itself mated to a 10-speed automatic.

The V8 would likely be more powerful than the outgoing ATS-V, which produced 464 hp from a 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6, but we don't expect the CT5-V to match the 640 hp figure found in the larger CTS-V with its 6.2-liter supercharged V8. We also don't expect a car as small as the CT4 to accommodate a V8, so it's anyone's guess as to what will power the CT4-V. Just like everyone else, we'll have to wait until May 30th to find out.

The 2019 CT6-V - Sold out!

Introducing the first-ever CT6-V. From its striking design to its groundbreaking powertrain, the CT6-V is as powerful as it is exhilarating. Only a limited number of vehicles will be for delivery mid-2019.

Cadillac has developed a high-performance CT6-V powered by the brand-exclusive 4.2-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 known as the Blackwing, which will be offered for 2019 only.

Owners can expect at least 550 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque on tap when the full-size sport sedan starts deliveries this summer, though they'll have to pay up $88,790 for the privilege. The purchase price also includes a 2-day driving course at a Cadillac-hosted event at the Spring Mountain Motor Resort in Pahrump, Nevada.

Sadly, the circle of owners will be a small one. Cadillac has decided to limit production to just 275 units—and yes they're all sold out!

Cadillac today announces the 2019 Pedestal Edition ATS-V Coupe and CTS-V Super Sedan to celebrate the successful first fifteen years (2004-18) of its Cadillac V-Series sub brand. The limited-run models bid a grand farewell to the third generation of ultra-high-performance V-Series models, and open the next major chapter in the sub-brand’s story. In total, 300 Pedestal Editions will be built for sale in the U.S., Canada, and the Middle East.

The special-edition variants are named in tribute to Cadillac V-Series’ time spent at the pinnacle of luxury high-performance.

The Pedestal Edition of the Cadillac ATS-V Coupe and CTS-V Super Sedan features a commemorative application of an all-new exterior color Bronze Sand Metallic, accented with Black Chrome trim and grille surround, V-Series forged light-alloy wheels in After Midnight finish over massive red Brembo® brake calipers, creating a striking exterior presence. The new high-performance version of the CT6 will now be known as the CT6-V, not the CT6 V-Sport, denoting that it's part of the full-bore V lineup along with the CTS-V and ATS-V. The new high-performance version of the CT6 will now be known as the CT6-V, not the CT6 V-Sport, denoting that it's part of the full-bore V lineup along with the CTS-V and ATS-V. “Beginning with the debut of the CTS-V Sedan in 2004, the V-Series sub-brand sparked new life into Cadillac,” said GM Product Development Chief Mark Reuss, according to The Detroit News. “As a result of the overwhelming response the CT6 V-Sport received when revealed in early 2018, we’ve decided to formally make it a V-Series, signaling the expansion of V-Series.”

Cadillac is ramping up the performance of its lineup-topping CT6 luxury sedan for 2019. The CT6 will be available as a V model for the first time, joining the CTS-V and ATS-V among Cadillac’s highest-performance offerings. However, the CT6-V is significant not only because it’s a new model but also because it debuts an all-new twin-turbocharged V-8 engine. The CT6-V does expand Cadillac’s V lineup as the company stated. It will join the ATS-V and CTS-V in the high-performance segment through the 2019 model year, so if you still want to savor the fruits of either offering, there's time to make it happen. As for the new sedans replacing both them, we will have to wait and see what Cadillac has in store. The company has an ambitious plan to roll out a new vehicle every six months between now and 2021.

The twin-turbo 4.2-liter V-8 is exclusive to Cadillac. Built from a blank slate with knowledge gained from General Motors’ racing programs, the new engine, known as Blackwing, makes 550 horsepower at 5700 rpm and 627 lb-ft of torque from 3200 to 4000 rpm. A “hot V” setup, which puts the turbochargers atop the block between the heads, aims to minimize turbo lag while making the engine more compact. We dive into the details of the new powerplant at length here. The forced-induction V-8 is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. (The new engine also will be available on non–V models, where it will have 500 horsepower and 553 lb-ft.)

The CT6-V has specific tuning that stiffens the suspension to abate body roll, and the standard Magnetic Ride Control dampers have been recalibrated. A mechanical limited-slip differential is fitted, and the steering has been retuned. The CT6-V rides on 20-inch wheels hugged by performance summer tires, and four-piston monoblock Brembo brake calipers should give drivers confidence in the left pedal. Cadillac also added a sport exhaust system with active valves for a livelier soundtrack. A Track driving mode alters the all-wheel-drive system's torque split, the stability-control mapping, the specially tuned rear-wheel steering, and the suspension firmness.

To visually distinguish the CT6-V from the rest of the CT6 lineup, there's a dark, "V-inspired" mesh grille and LED headlights. Lower-body aero pieces provide a sportier look, the windows are outlined with gloss-black trim, and a rear spoiler finishes the package. The V sits at the top of a refreshed CT6 lineup, which will be divided into Luxury and Sport trims, a strategy similar to that of the Mercedes-Benz E-class. The entire refreshed 2019 CT6 lineup shows influences from the Escala concept, with horizontal styling elements incorporated into the reworked front and rear ends.

Cadillac's Super Cruise suite of driver-assistance systems is not offered on the CT6-V, but there is plenty of other news on the technology front. A revised rear-camera mirror can tilt and zoom, the 360-degree-view monitor includes a video-recording function that activates when the security system is activated, pedestrian detection and automated braking now work when backing up as well as when going forward, and the wireless device charging capability has been enhanced. Most welcome, however, may be the changes to Cadillac's much derided CUE infotainment interface, which gains a rotary controller and a volume knob as well as shortcut buttons to primary menu functions.

Cadillac today unveiled the CT6 V-Sport, the first-ever V-Performance model of its top-of-range sedan. The introduction of the high-performance variant coincides with a makeover of the entire CT6 lineup that incorporates the newest iteration of Cadillac’s design language featured on the Escala Concept. The Cadillac V-Sport portfolio currently includes the CTS V-Sport and the XTS V-Sport.

“Cadillac V-Sport is the embodiment of our passion to deliver an exhilarating driving experience without compromises,” said Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen. “The all-new CT6 V-Sport provides the perfect balance of performance and luxurious refinement.”

The CT6 V-Sport boasts an all-new Cadillac 4.2L Twin Turbo V-8 Cadillac -estimated at 550 horsepower (410 kW) and stunning 627 lb-ft of torque (850 Nm) that elevates the CT6’s performance to a new plateau and offers drivers an unparalleled experience behind the wheel. At the center of the Cadillac Twin Turbo V8 is a “hot V” configuration that transposes the conventional layout of the cylinder heads’ intake and exhaust systems to mount the turbochargers at the top of the engine — in the valley between the heads — to virtually eliminate turbo lag and reduce the engine’s overall packaging size.

REFRESHED CT6 LINEUP

CT6 retains a dominant vertical light signature and adds horizontal elements to give the front end a more aggressive appearance. That inspiration continues to the back with the new rear lighting graphic, which is most visible at night.

"The V-Sport gave us the opportunity to accentuate the aggressive dynamics of the architecture," said Andrew Smith, executive director of Cadillac Design. "The CT6 is the first entry that incorporates cues for the new Sport and V-Sport model strategy, which allowed us to make the car look as powerful as it drives."

In addition to the introduction of the CT6 V-Sport, the 2019 CT6 lineup incorporates Cadillac’s new “Y” trim strategy for its models — each model will have Luxury and Sport trims with distinct personas and features. On non-V-Sport CT6 models, new horizontal high-lumen headlights and a revised taillight design refresh Cadillac’s signature lighting, inspired by the Escala Concept.

INTUITIVE TECHNOLOGIES

Led by the latest Cadillac user experience — the brand’s most advanced infotainment interface — the CT6 offers a connected environment.

The Cadillac user experience is a dynamic platform that offers a smartphone-like experience with an intuitive interface, faster response and improved voice recognition from previous generations. The system can be updated over time to meet a customer’s evolving connectivity needs. It leverages the cloud and available embedded 4G LTE connection to enable personalization, available connected navigation and news, marketplace and entertainment applications via the app store and a new rotary controller that offers users alternative ways to interact with the system.

The new controller includes volume and seek forward/back controls for the audio system; shortcut buttons for fast access to the most frequently used apps such as Audio, Phone, Navigation (if available) and Home; and a large center dial to operate primary features of the most frequently used apps, scroll menus and lists and select other apps to be displayed.

Cadillac begins a new chapter in its high-performance legacy with today’s introduction of the brand’s first-ever twin-turbo V-8 engine. It is the centerpiece of the new CT6 V-Sport, an engaging sports sedan infused with DNA of Cadillac’s world-renowned motorsports program.

Developed as a small-displacement V-8 in the classic vein and offering exceptional power density of 131 hp (98 kW) per liter, this new Cadillac-exclusive 4.2L Twin Turbo V-8 — GM estimated at 550 horsepower (410 kW) and 627 lb-ft of torque (850 Nm) — elevates the CT6’s performance to a new plateau and offers drivers an unparalleled experience behind the wheel. An optional 500-horsepower version will also be available.

At the center of the 4.2L Twin Turbo V-8 is a “hot V” configuration that transposes the conventional layout of the cylinder heads’ intake and exhaust systems to mount the turbochargers at the top of the engine — in the valley between the heads — to virtually eliminate turbo lag and reduce the engine’s overall packaging size.

In a conventional turbocharged engine, the cylinder heads receive the pressurized air charge through ports at the top of the engine and the exhaust exits through ports on the lower outside of the heads into manifolds connected to the turbochargers.

With Cadillac’s innovative hot V design, the intake-charged air enters through the lower outside of the heads and exits through the top inside — where the turbochargers are integrated with the exhaust manifolds — for quick spool-up that translates into more immediate power delivery. The design also allows closer mounting of the catalytic converters, for efficient packaging.

SMALL DISPLACEMENT, LARGE EFFECT

The new Cadillac Twin Turbo V-8’s foundation is an all-new, durable and lightweight aluminum cylinder block that houses an equally robust, lightweight rotating assembly composed of a forged steel crankshaft, forged steel connecting rods and high-strength aluminum pistons.

The crankshaft’s 90.2mm (3.55 inch) stroke complements the cylinder bores’ 86mm (3.39 inch) diameter to give the engine its 4.2L (255 cubic-inch) displacement.

Its comparatively small bore dimension enables the reduction in the size and weight of the pistons, optimizing the engine’s geometry to match the fast-rev capability permitted by the engine’s low-inertia, twin-scroll turbochargers. The result is exceptional responsiveness and immediacy of power across the rpm band.

The turbochargers produce up to 20 pounds of boost (1.38 bar) and are matched with electronic wastegate control for more precise boost management and more responsive torque production. In fact, 90 percent of the engine’s peak torque is available at only 2000 rpm, and it is carried through 5200 rpm for a confident, virtually bottomless power reserve.

TWIN-SCROLL TURBOCHARGERS

The turbos’ twin-scroll design broadens their performance capability, offering quicker response and greater efficiency. Rather than a single spiral chamber (scroll) feeding exhaust gas from the exhaust manifold to drive the turbine on each turbocharger, the twin-scroll design has a divided housing with two exhaust gas inlets and two nozzles to drive the turbine. Generally, one of the nozzles contributes to quicker response and boost production, while the other contributes to overall peak performance.

Each of the engine’s integrated exhaust manifolds/turbocharger housings splits the exhaust channels from the cylinder head so the exhaust flows through separate scrolls based on the engine’s exhaust pulses. When matched with precise valve timing, that separation leverages exhaust-scavenging techniques to optimize gas flow, improves turbine efficiency and reduces turbo lag.

The electronically controlled wastegates — one per turbocharger — are used for more precise management of the engine’s boost pressure and subsequent torque response for smoother, more consistent performance. They are independently controlled on each cylinder bank to balance the turbo compressors’ output, for greater boost pressure response.

WATER-TO-AIR CHARGE COOLING AND DUAL THROTTLE BODIES

An efficient water-to-air charge-cooling system contributes to the engine’s performance, enhancing the turbochargers’ effectiveness. Similar in concept to an engine’s radiator, the system’s intercoolers cool the boosted air charge before it enters the cylinders. Cooler air is denser, which means there is more oxygen in a given volume, resulting in optimal combustion and more power.

The system features a pair of heat exchangers located above the valley-mounted exhaust manifold/turbocharger housings. The turbos pump pressurized air directly through the heat exchangers and into the cylinder heads. The heat exchangers are cooled by their own coolant circuit.

The intercoolers lower the air charge temperature by more than 130 degrees F (74 C), packing the combustion chambers with cooler, denser air. Also, the system achieves more than 80 percent cooling efficiency with only about 1 psi (7 kPa) flow restriction at peak power, which contributes to fast torque production.

Before entering the combustion chambers, the cooled air charge flows through a pair of throttle bodies, one for each engine bank. Each electronically controlled throttle body has a 59mm diameter opening.

NEW 10-SPEED TRANSMISSION

The new Cadillac Twin Turbo V-8 is matched with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Its wide, 7.39 overall gear ratio spread enhances off-the-line performance and contributes to reduced engine speed on the highway, which enhances refinement and efficiency. Smaller steps between the gears also help the engine maintain the optimal speed for maximum power at almost all vehicle speeds.

ADDITIONAL TECHNOLOGIES

Direct fuel injection is used to optimize efficiency and performance. With direct injection, a higher compression ratio — 9.8:1 — is possible because of a cooling effect as the injected fuel vaporizes in the combustion chamber, reducing the charge temperature to lessen the likelihood of spark knock. A pair of engine-mounted, camshaft-driven high-pressure fuel pumps supplies fuel to the specialized injectors at 5,075 psi (350 bar), with each pump supplying fuel to one bank of the engine.

Active Fuel Management (AFM), also known as cylinder deactivation, imperceptibly shuts down half of the engine’s cylinders in certain light-load driving conditions to enhance fuel economy. Unique deactivating rocker arms are used for each of the four valves of the cylinder being deactivated.

Dual overhead camshafts and a virtually silent chain-driven valvetrain contribute to the smoothness and the high output of the Cadillac Twin Turbo V-8, while dual independent continuously variable valve timing helps deliver optimal performance and efficiency. The dual independent system, which allows the intake and exhaust valves to be phased at different rates, promotes linear delivery of torque with near-peak levels over a broad rpm range, and high specific output (horsepower per liter of displacement) without sacrificing overall engine response or drivability.

Oil jets located in the block are employed for performance and temperature control. Four jet assemblies in the engine drench the underside of the pistons and the surrounding cylinder walls with an extra layer of cooling, friction-reducing oil. The jets reduce piston temperature, allowing the engine to produce more power without reducing long-term durability.

Variable-pressure oiling system. A variable-displacement vane oil pump enhances efficiency by optimizing oil pressure as a function of engine speed. With it, the oil supply is matched to the engine load rather than the linear operation of a conventional, fixed-flow oil pump. The engine uses 10 quarts of General Motors’ dexos2 0W40 motor oil.

Stop/start technology shuts down the engine when the vehicle stops momentarily, such as at stoplights. The engine automatically restarts when the driver takes their foot off the brake. An auxiliary battery powers electric accessories such as the climate system, power windows and radio during engine restarts.

Cadillac Commemorates IMSA Title With Championship Edition V-Series Models

Manufacturer Endurance Championships in 2017, Cadillac has announced a limited-production Championship Edition of the company's high-performance models: the 2018 ATS-V coupe and sedan and the 2018 CTS-V sedan.

Cadillac made its return to endurance racing in 2016, 14 years after it last competed in the category, entering three cars in IMSA’s Daytona Prototype international (DPi) class. Including Jeff Gordon, Ricky Taylor, Jordan Taylor and Max Angelelli’s win at the season-opening Rolex 24 at Daytona, Cadillac’s DPi-V.R racers won the first seven races of the season to clinch the manufacturer’s championship. Additionally, the Konica Minolta team—one of three race teams running Cadillac’s DPi-V.R prototype race car—took the team championship, and brothers Ricky and Jordan Taylor won the drivers’ championship.

The cars that mark the achievement are the ATS-V Championship Edition coupe and sedan and the CTS-V Championship Edition. All models come in black or white with red accents. Special graphics adorn the hood, spoiler, and quarter-windows. V-Performance Academy Announcement

Cadillac is launching a new V-Performance Academy at Spring Mountain. The V-Performance Academy is a 2-day driver training experience located about 50 miles west of Las Vegas that is – importantly – now included with every 2017 model year Cadillac V-Series retail purchase. The two-day course includes a combination of track performance driving, car control safety exercises, and classroom training to help customers improve technique and take driving skills up a level. Thanks to small class sizes, customers will receive attention from professional instructors on and off the track. As part of this luxury experience, customer may bring a guest, who is welcome to enjoy the resort’s amenities.

In addition to the Cadillac V-Performance Academy, the popular V-Performance Lab will continue in key locations as part of the overall Cadillac V-Performance Driver Training offer. This year, the V-Performance Lab will take place at Lime Rock Park from October 20-22, and once again at Circuit of the Americas, this time from November 18-20.

After delivery to the original retail customer of a new, unused, 2017 model V-Series unit, Cadillac will reach out with a Welcome Package insert to remind the customer s/he has one year from the date of retail purchase to schedule Academy attendance. Preregistration is accomplished between the customer and Spring Mountain Motorsports Resort and Country Club, facilitated by a link from Cadillac.com and coupled to the customer’s V-Series VIN.

Cadillac lures a new corps of marketing pros

NEW YORK -- Matt Russell has owned several BMWs and has raced them for years. He fulfilled a childhood dream by working for the stalwart German automaker for more than a decade -- until June, when he left BMW to take a marketing post at Cadillac.

He's among about 60 newcomers to join Cadillac's global headquarters here recently; it relocates this week from temporary digs to a permanent home in a lower Manhattan office building overlooking the Hudson River.

Some, like Russell, have come from marketing roles at other luxury auto brands, including Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar and Audi. Others arrived from the world of high-end consumer goods: Godiva, Ann Taylor and Belvedere vodka, to name a few.

Why would these relatively young marketers leave such established, top-shelf brands for a daunting reclamation project -- one that even Cadillac's top executives acknowledge could take a decade?

In short, they see an unprecedented chance to reboot a 113-year-old brand, a name once synonymous with greatness.

That opportunity has attracted a diverse mix of marketers, several of whom shared their reasoning during interviews in New York this month. They like what they describe as a startup atmosphere, a vibe nurtured by Cadillac's relocation to New York. They have bought into the comeback story outlined by brand president Johan de Nysschen and marketing chief Uwe Ellinghaus. Many say they favor the frenetic pace of a turnaround project over maintaining the status quo at an elite brand.

That was the motivating factor for Russell, 38, who helped launch the Mini brand while at BMW.

"I've never forgotten how exciting it was to go out and find growth like" the Mini launch, said Russell, life-cycle marketing manager for Cadillac's ATS and CTS cars. "BMW is slow and steady growth. I was at a point where I wanted to take some real risk."

Cadillac's new global nerve center is run from the top two levels of a 16-floor, century-old office building in a neighborhood that abuts three of Manhattan's trendiest areas: SoHo, Tribeca and Greenwich Village. A ground-floor space of cement floors and bare lightbulbs will house a Cadillac experience center by next year -- think lounge area with a mix of new and classic Cadillac cars and digital displays. It will share the street level with an exposed-brick coffee shop that has a latte tap and sells an 8-ounce bag of exotic Panamanian coffee beans for $58.

The headquarters houses mostly marketing and brand-strategy people. The roughly 60 newcomers are joined by about the same number of Cadillac or General Motors veterans.

Of course, thousands more support Cadillac back in Detroit, where designers and engineers are working on a slew of new vehicles that Cadillac badly needs to compete with BMW, Mercedes and others in coming years. But the people working here just might face a tougher task.

Cadillac got the attention of invited guests from the New York fashion world at an event this month when it airlifted an illuminated 2017 XT5 crossover over the Hudson River.

'Starting from scratch'

They're assigned the heavy lifting of transforming Cadillac from a stodgy relic into a contemporary lifestyle brand, one that generates the sort of organic demand that compels people to buy a Mercedes or a Gucci handbag simply because of what the badge conveys.

Cadillac's marketers are trying to do that by discreetly putting the brand in the path of influencers from the worlds of fashion and architectural design, two lifestyle realms with which Cadillac is trying to align itself. This month it co-hosted a men's fashion show at a classic-car club near Cadillac's headquarters, where a few hundred 20- and 30-something fashionistas mingled while sipping cocktails and perusing the latest items from a collection curated by Cadillac from New York designer Nick Wooster. A couple scantly noticed that new V-series sedans sat amid the crowd.

"To an extent we're starting from scratch in the way we approach the brand," said Amanda Knauer, a brand strategy and implementation manager who joined Cadillac in May after having worked at Belgian chocolate maker Godiva and Johnny Walker scotch.

Knauer, 34, a New Jersey native and longtime New Yorker who once ran her own leather-goods company in Buenos Aires, says she was attracted by the chance to apply an entrepreneurial approach to an established, iconic brand. "It's not just inheriting last year's plan as a template. It's looking at things with a fresh set of eyes," she said.

Pierre-Alexandre Lebard, 30, agrees. He became Cadillac's global marketing planning manager in June after leaving French luxury goods maker LVMH, where he managed the Belvedere vodka brand. He says the fundamentals of selling to luxury buyers are the same, whether its autos or liquor.

"It's knowing not only how to reach that really tough-minded luxury consumer but then build and manage a relationship with them," he said.

Blind spots

De Nysschen likes the mix of old and new blood. He says part of the calculus of GM's decision one year ago to split off Cadillac as a separate business unit based in New York was to recruit talented people who might not have wanted to live in Detroit, especially those with nonautomotive backgrounds.

"We have enough car experts," de Nysschen said in a July interview. "I wanted people who bring new ideas and perspectives because we might have blind spots." Being in New York allows Cadillac "to be there where trends are created, to not only observe them firsthand but be immersed in them."

Cadillac has been reeling in defectors from luxury automakers, too, though, including a handful who left Mercedes ahead of its recent move to Atlanta from Montvale, N.J.

Eric Jillard, 45, left Mercedes last spring after six years to become Cadillac's director of brand execution and digital marketing. He had some doubts, he admits. During his job interview with Ellinghaus, Jillard expressed concern about how far Cadillac must go to gain awareness even in its new hometown.

"I told Uwe: 'I don't know one person who owns a Cadillac,'" Jillard said.

But ultimately he bought into the plan, partly because of how Cadillac's executives have articulated their vision and their commitment to see it through.

"They've made it clear that this isn't just another turnaround plan without any real plan," Jillard said. "We really feel like we're on the cusp of something great."

Cadillac May Offer More Aggressive V-Series Tune to Target Mercedes AMG Black Series

Cadillac’s new ATS-V may be a genuine rival to BMW’s M3/M4 and Mercedes-AMG’s C63, but right now the American luxury brand doesn’t have an answer to more potent offerings from the Germans such as BMW’s GTS-badged cars and Mercedes’ Black Series models. That might not be the case for long as a senior Cadillac executive has revealed that a more aggressive V-Series tune is being looked at.

“We might have something down the road that is a little bit more aggressive,” Cadillac chief engineer Dave Leone told Car and Driver when asked about a more aggressive version of the ATS-V. The extra aggression is likely to come from extra power, stiffer suspension and lighter weight, as Leone ruled out adding things like all-wheel drive (because of the added weight) and switching to a dual-clutch transmission (because Caddy’s eight-speed auto is quicker and lighter).

Another source told the magazine that the more aggressive V-Series tune could be available as early as 2017.

That’s not all that’s planned for Cadillac’s burgeoning V-Series brand. Cadillac global marketing director Jim Vurpillat said that more high-performance models were planned. He said Cadillac would be adding eight new entries in five separate segments over the coming years, and one or two of these eight models could also get the V-Series treatment. This is in addition to the tamer Vsport branding that could be applied to even more models from Cadillac.
